Start your Jewish Ghetto Tour with Local Food and Wine Tastings with a walk around the Jewish Quarter in the Cannaregio district, a less frequented area that the Venetians refer to as being the most authentic. The Jewish Ghetto in Venice came up in 1516 when Jews were forced to live in the colonies, as they were feared to dominate the business sector. There have been times that the Jews were locked in at night and during religious festivals. The Jewish population grew in the ghettos during war due to refugee settlements, which resulted in buildings that grew haphazardly to accommodate them.
The Jewish Ghetto is also known to be the inspiration for William Shakespeare’s most noted work The Merchant of Venice. It is still an active centre for the Jewish community, and the surrounding alleyways, bridges and canals have maintained their unique identity through the ages. Learn about the area’s history and culture as you wander its charming streets, passing by synagogues, kosher eateries, unique shops, an open-air market and a traditional mask-making workshop.
The best time to visit the area is in the evening, when the localites after work meet friends and hangout in their favourite bars. Live in the experience like the local Jews as your English speaking guide will take you for a stroll through the picturesque canals into the open air markets with shops selling kosher goods. On the way, the guide will ensure to fill in notes about the local traditions and culture.
Your guide will take you to three of the most sought after Venetian wine bars called bàcari. Savour several of Venice’s bite-size versions of local delicacies called cicchetti. The bacaris, in which, wine glasses and bottles line the brick and stone walls, and the localites indulge in daily gossip and discussions. You will sample some of the city’s most extraordinary offerings, whether it’s expertly seasoned and fried meatballs, creamy codfish mousse or a creative bruschetta.
Each serving will be accompanied with ombra, a small glass of one of the regions many renowned varieties of wine (included in the tour price). Your guide will share fascinating insights such as how the word ombra, which means ‘shadow’, comes from a centuries-old tradition when merchants would sell their wine in the shadow of St. Mark’s bell tower in order to keep themselves, and the wine, cool.
This service ends near Campo della Maddalena around 8:00pm
