The tour commences on the platform directly in front of Trajan’s Column. Trajan’s Column (~30 m high with engravings) is located on Via dei Fori Imperiali next to Piazza Venezia. When standing right in front and facing the Victor Emmanuel II Monument (a.k.a. the “Wedding Cake), it’s directly to the left across the street. In the summer, your tour coordinator will be waiting there wearing a blue polo shirt with the City Wonders logo printed on it, and in the winter, a blue jacket of the same design.
The tour ends at the Colosseum
Avoid the crowd and the heat with this fantastic Night Tour of the Colosseum! The unique tour gives you an advantage over other group tours as it avoids the hectic days and takes you to the iconic amphitheatre at night when the tour groups and visitors have left. With groups accommodating not more than 20 people, you can rest assured that this will be an intimate experience with greater opportunity to listen in to the unheard tales of the city.
The journey begins at the Trajan’s Column, an ancient structure dating from 112 AD, located on Via dei Fori Imperiali next to Piazza Venezia. Head up Michelangelo’s staircase to reach the Campidoglio – the beautiful piazza outside the Capitoline Museums. The guide will find a little-known vantage point overlooking the Roman Forum (closed at this hour) and will talk about the history and architecture of the historic centre – pointing out temples, arches and the sanctuary of Ancient Rome’s famous Vestal Virgins. This is a sight that you surely won’t forget in a long, long time!
Inarguably, the most majestic structure of the Roman Empire, the Colosseum (originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre) is inhabited by myriad tales of bravery, public life and royalty in ancient Rome. Despite the pillage of natural disasters, fires, pollution and wars, it is a living proof of the stunning architecture and strong masonry of the ancient world, and has served as a model for stadiums around the world. Dive back into the past as you get regaled with the history of a time when gladiatorial contests and mock sea battles were all the rage, with the venue being a source of entertainment for emperors and the public.
You will also visit the Arena floor where you will be amazed to see the magnitude of the Flavian Amphitheatre. What makes this tour even more interesting, though, is a trip to the Underground section, treading the tunnels that gladiators and beasts walked before being hoisted onto the arena floor via trap doors. You will venture into the place where few visitors have access to, especially at night - making this tour a truly exclusive affair!
