See the city’s ancient prison, pagan temples and roman houses. Explore the Mamertine prison where, during the age of persecution, the two apostles Peter and Paul spent time before being martyred. Enjoy a journey back in time at the church of St. Clement's as you descend down through two thousand years of history and marvel at the frescoes and the mythological scenes in the ancient roman houses.
Meet your English-speaking in a central location, proceed on foot to visit the hidden city of Rome. On this tour you will visit:
• Ancient Mamertine Prison: See the gloomy dungeons of the Mamertine Prison, the oldest of its kind. During the persecutions of the Christians, the two apostles Peter and Paul spent time here in chains before being martyred.
• Church of St. Clement's: The medieval church was built over the remains of a 4th century basilica which at its turn covers older buildings from the time of the emperor Nero and a sanctuary dedicated to the oriental divinity Mithras.
• Roman Houses: Under the 5th century Basilica of St. John and Paul, visit ancient Roman houses that were discovered in recent times. See the frescoes and the mythological scenes that are still visible on the walls of these ancient buildings.
The tour ends in the Historical Centre of Rome.
