Pompeii from Rome is just a comfortable drive away with this morning shuttle-bus transfer. Leaving at 7:30am from Rome gives you ample time for a 2-hour guided tour and then some ‘me time’ at the excavation site before heading back to Rome at 3:30pm.
On the way, see the changing landscape and keep your eyes glued outside the window as you drive past charming Italian villages, hillside vineyards and when you see the mighty Mount Vesuvius from a distance, that’s the time you will know that you have reached your destination.
Once you reach the UNESCO-World Heritage site, your guide will take over and through a priority entrance take you inside where Pompeian villagers and aristocrats once went about their daily activities. Listen closely to your guide as s/he takes you to the Temple of Apollo, a supermarket, cemetery and a Roman basilica, and share interesting anecdotes about these places. Rome may not have fallen in a day, but Pompeii did – literally! It took just one day – 24 August, 79 AD, for it to get buried for the next seventeen centuries, under the volcanic ash of the fierce Mount Vesuvius.
If you believe, Pompeii was just another Roman city with its myriad tales of warfare, gladiatorial fights, historical monuments and grandeur? Think again. During the first century AD, the city developed into a sprawling tourist destination with the luxurious resort for its wealthy visitors, Roman villas, an amphitheatre, several temples, brothels and highly mechanized waterway systems.
After the guided tour, it will be time to head back to Rome. Ponder over the city and what you saw in Pompeii and you will arrive at your destination in no time.
