During a 2 ½ hour evening excursion, you’ll sample some of California's finest ales and wines while learning about the unique history of North Beach and its colorful characters, ranging from literary masters to seafaring legends.

You will sample an award-winning Northern California craft brew.

Explore a neighborhood that was built on the remains of ships abandoned after the gold rush of 1849! And enjoy the bohemian ambience of Vesuvio Café, which nurtured writers of the Beat generation!

If you are brave enough, you can even try your hand at serenading the house at a local karaoke bar! And don’t forget to ask your guide for hot tips for exploring this vibrant district further on your own.


Your relaxed North Beach Walking Pub Tour gets underway when you meet your guide at Vesuvio Café, 255 Columbus Avenue. On this walking tour of 2 ½ hours, you’ll discover the fascinating history of North Beach, the heart of San Francisco's Italian district. You’ll explore the best bars, pubs and cafés, and sample some of California’s finest ales and wines!

You will sample an award-winning Northern California craft brew.

At Vesuvio Café, you’ll learn about its famed literary gatherings, which inspired several Beat generation writers. This local favorite has a marvelous collection of photos of writers, actors and artist adorning the walls. You’ll sample Anchor Steam ale, brewed since 1896, or one of the world-class wines from Sonoma and Napa Valley.

Next, you’ll head into North Beach, once home to fortune seekers, local fisherman, international sailors and writers. No longer a beach this neighborhood was settled upon landfill, including the hulks of ships abandoned after the 1849 gold rush. You’ll explore the bars, including one decorated with trinkets left behind by sailors! And visit the city’s oldest watering hole with its colorful mix of locals and thriving big blues music scene. In a traditional Italian café, complete with red leather booths and a classic jukebox spinning 45s, you can down an espresso.

Your tour ends at Washington Square,a local hub that’s well connected to public transport. This is the ideal spot to independently explore North Beach’s wealth of cafés, bars and restaurants. Your guide will be happy to provide some excellent suggestions to assist your exploration.
