The Leiðarendi cave is located in the Blue Mountains right outside of Reykjavik, and is home to a variety of unique lava formations and massive tunnels, remnants of historical eruptions and volcanic activity. You’ll head into its depths before later resurfacing to ride in the surrounding lava fields. Depending on which path you take, you might pass the old Kaldársel sheep corral or Lake Hvaleyrarvatn on your horse, but all the while you’ll have stunning views of Mt. Helgafell and the Bláfjöll Mountains on the horizon.
The trip starts and ends at your hotel in Reykjavik, so at the end of your action-packed day, you’ll have plenty of time for a nice evening out in the city or resting up for tomorrows adventure!
Your tour starts when your expert tour guide picks you up from your hotel in Reykjavik between 8:30am and 9:00am. You will then leave the bustle of the city and head towards the massive lava fields tucked in and around the Blue Mountains, located about 25 minutes away.
Here, you’ll start your adventure in the Leiðarendi lava cave. This stunning structure was formed over 2,000 years ago in a period of intense volcanic activity, the remnants of which you can still see today in its impressive rock formations and deep underground passages. As you climb, crawl, and walk through its dark interior, you’ll learn about Iceland’s dramatic formation and the constant natural forces that continually change its subterranean landscapes.
By the time you’ve surfaced, you’ll have worked up an appetite, so you’ll be taken to the Íshestar horse farm for a satisfying lunch. Belly full, it’s time to saddle up as you head back outside for the second part of the tour, horseback riding! The peaceful trail winds through lava fields in the shadow of the Mt. Helgafell Volcano. You might get the chance to pass through the old Kaldársel sheep corral or ride to Lake Hvaleyrarvatn, and your guide will point out the different lava formations along the way. All riding is done on excellent paths with the beautiful Bláfjöll Mountains in the background.
By the end of this full day adventure, you’ll have seen Iceland from two completely different angles, yet understand how they come together to form its magnificent natural landscape. You’ll be guided back to your hotel in Reykjavik at the end of the tour.
