This ever-popular sightseeing route showcases some of the most dramatic natural features of the ‘Land of Ice and Fire’ as well as important historic sites.
Discover lovely Þingvellir National Park and learn about its extraordinary geology. See where Iceland is being pulled apart by massive forces within Earth’s crust and visit the birth-place of the Icelandic parliament (the world’s oldest).
Admire Gullfoss, most magnificent of Iceland’s waterfalls, and view the jets of water at Geysir – the natural fountains that have lent their name to all the hot springs of the world.
If you just have one afternoon but want to see as much of beautiful Iceland as possible, this is the perfect tour for you.
See Iceland’s top historic and natural attractions in just 6 hours when you take the Golden Circle Afternoon Tour From Reykjavik. At the start of the tour, you will be picked up from your hotel in an air-conditioned coach. A guide will accompany you on this tour.
You will first visit Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place of fascinating geology and exceptional natural beauty. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge – the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates – is clearly visible here. As North America moves slowly westward and Eurasia moves equally slowly eastward, Iceland is being pulled apart along this boundary line.
Þingvellir is also of great historic interest because it was the site where the Icelandic parliament, Alþingi, was founded in the year 930 AD.
The tour continues to the beautiful Gullfoss waterfall ('Golden Waterfall' in English), where you can walk so close to the edge you feel the mist of the glacial water on your face.
You will also visit the geothermal area around the incredible spouting hot springs of Geysir and Strokkur before going on to Hveragerði. This small town is famous for its greenhouses heated by water from volcanic hot springs.
At the end of your delightful tour you will be dropped back at your hotel in Reykjavik.
