  • Overview & Itinerary

Only a two-hour drive from Reykjavik, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is a world unto itself.

The entire peninsula was recently awarded the Green Globe 21 certification, which recognizes sterling environmental preservation efforts throughout the world. To date, only three other areas on the planet have been honored.

Spend a day exploring this unspoiled wonderland, where nature’s inventions are permitted to flourish without human interruption.

The landscape is a gallery of strange and beautiful lava formations, the skies are filled with birds, and the sea is alive with marine life.

Take a nature walk along the jagged cliffs of Arnarstapi, immerse yourself in the deliberate rhythm of small fishing villages, and stare up at the Snæfellsjökull glacier, where the protagonists in Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth” find a passage leading to the center of the earth.

You will be picked up by bus from your Reykjavik hotel and set out on a scenic two-hour drive to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. You will be accompanied by an English-speaking guide that knows all the secrets of the Peninsula.

Drive to the picturesque Gerðuberg, a columnar basalt cliff in Hnappadalur valley, and Ölkelda, a natural spring of clean drinking water. We then continue around the peninsula.

Along the way, stop at the mythical Snæfellsjökull glacier, which soars to a snowy summit more than 1400 meters above the sea and has long been a mainstay in Icelandic folklore as a haunt of elves, fairies and trolls. A dormant volcano, hundreds of people assemble here every summer to soak up what they believe to be supernatural energy radiation.

Make your way to Arnarstapi, which sits at the foot of Mt. Stapafell, central in Icelandic legend as the home of a creature that was half-man and half-ogre.

Spend up to an hour hiking and bird watching along the precipitous shoreline, where lava formations look like the work of some abstract sculptor and Arctic Terns nest in the rugged cliffs.

Continue your journey to the National Park, where you can walk along windswept beaches and look for majestic razorbills circling in the skies.

Visit the charming village of Stykkishólmur, where you’ll have free time to explore and enjoy magnificent views of Breiðafjörður Bay.

A stop will be made during your tour at a local restaurant, where you can purchase food and refreshments (payable direct). After lunch, continue to Vatnshellir lava tube cave that lies in the Snæfellsjökull National Park. You‘ll plunge into a subterranean world of stalactites, stalagmites, and strange lava formations that, in the glow of your headlight, form eerie shapes and shadows flickering across the walls of the cave.

You will be returned to your Reykjavik hotel at tour’s end.
