There’s a few things one must do when visiting the British capital. First: buy an umbrella. Second: check out Buckingham Palace (as well as other proper old, legendary British monuments). Finally, and perhaps most importantly: call in on a classic local pub for a decent pint and good food. This London Landmarks tour, run by London Urban Adventures, ticks off two of the aforementioned – and, if you ask nicely, guides may be able to swing you an umbrella too.
The crux of this tour focuses on experiencing London’s classic highlights reel – you know, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Downing Street, Covent Garden, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, that whole scene – but, what makes this stand out from the many other tours of a similar nature are the characters who run it. Guides on this tour are proper Londoners, they know the city, its people and its stories inside and out and they deliver their spiels with gusto. When in London, hey…
About your guide
City sights come with a side of personality on London Urban Adventures tours. The team make guiding groups through Central London look easy (we promise it’s not); and summarising complex historic dramas into amusing tidbits a walk in the park (again, it’s far from it). Basically, you’re in good hands.
Here’s the plan…
Meet your guide at Piccadilly Circus. From there, you’ll make your way to St James’s Palace via a few intriguing pit stops (including Winston Churchill’s old drinking hole). After a peek at the former home of Princess Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry, it’s on to the magnificent Buckingham Palace, the residence of the British monarchy for centuries. Then – weather permitting – you’ll see the Changing of the Guard. Strolling through the pristine Royal Parks, your guide will fill you in on the Queen: her late-night visitor, crazy gifts and daily duties. Throughout the tour, your guide paints a picture of the monarchy through times of war and hardship, as well as the happy moments too. Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament is up next. Here, your guide will tell the stories of Britain’s rebels including the infamous William Wallace and Guy Fawkes.
On to the Ministry of Defence, Household Cavalry and, finally, Downing Street, to see where the PM calls home. By the time you get to Trafalgar Square, you’ll be in need of a drink or two. Thankfully your tour ends at a traditional English boozer, where you’ll enjoy a pint and a full pub lunch. Choose a meal and tuck in, you’ll have earned it.
Meet at the Winged Statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus. Your guide will be standing close by with a large red and white umbrella handy.
The confirmation voucher includes the local activity operator’s contact details. They’re a nice bunch, and will happily answer any logistical questions you may have.
The Changing of the Guard is subject to weather conditions and special events, so we can’t guarantee it will go ahead as planned on your chosen tour day. Also, there will be several occasions throughout the year when sites are closed due to major national parades or commercial events. Should this happen, the Urban Adventures team will tailor their route accordingly and make sure you still see all the best bits.
London Urban Adventures prefers to keep groups nice and small – so this tour will never exceed 12 people.
Little ones from the age of six upwards are welcome on this tour.
