  • Overview

Auschwitz. The very name brings a chill to the spine and reminds us of one of the worst war crimes that history has ever witnessed. A trip to Auschwitz is a pilgrimage to pay respect to the millions of Jews who suffered incarceration, suffering, and torture under the gruesome Nazi regime. The place is a poignant reminder of human tragedy during World War II.

Your Auschwitz-Birkenau tour begins from Krakow from where you will travel in a comfortable Mercedes van or minibus. During the journey, you will watch a 45-minute documentary film, The Liberation of Auschwitz that will set the tone for what you are going to see ahead.

The first stop of your tour is Alte Judenrampe, where the Jews were disembarked from cattle carts to freight trains that took them to the Birkenau concentration camp. Next, you will enter the labyrinthine ‘Hallway of Questions’ to see artist Rick Wienecke's tribute to the dead – Fountain of Tears. The artwork is a touching representation of the Holocaust and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Continue your tour to Birkenau where your driver-guide will hand you a guidebook. Tour the infamous concentration camp on your own, now preserved as a memento of Europe’s darkest chapter. Established by the Nazis in 1940, Birkenau was supposed to be a camp for prisoners of war but soon was turned into a place of extermination for the Jews. As World War II was about to end, the Germans tried to destroy all evidence of the atrocities, however, some constructions and original buildings remain. You will feel a certain eeriness around the place when you visit the gas chambers, guard towers, wooden and brick barracks, and the crematorium.

You will have 2.5 hours in Birkenau after which you will leave for Krakow. On the way, your vehicle will stop at Monowitz, a subcamp where prisoners were forced to work at a rubber factory in adverse conditions. Your tour ends at Krakow.
