Join a historian and local expert on a 3-hour small-group walking tour (maximum 6 participants) of the infamous Berlin Wall. Behold the Wall which surrounded West Berlin, separating the city into East and West Berlin between the years of 1961 and 1989. Begin your journey at the Berlin Wall Memorial, and visit the site in-depth.
Dive into the history of the Wall, including how and why it was built, its implications on everyday life, and the fall and reunification process. With your small group size we have the opportunity to ask questions along the way and be immersed in the stories of everyday Berliners who experienced the division, tales of harrowing escape attempts, and the efforts of West Berlin to support its citizens as land-locked island within East Germany.
Depending on time, the tour may include a trip over to the East Side Gallery, or finish at the cemetery at Invalidenhof, in front of the Brandenburg Gate, or in the hustle and bustle of Potsdamer Platz. Regardless of your exact route, you’ll conclude by contemplating the memories of the Wall and question how Berlin, more than 25 years after the fall, should memorialize and move forward from this difficult and complex time in the city’s history.
