Viva Las Vegas: Enjoying the Best of the Desert City

by Gavin Darvell

Wait a minute, one moment I’m looking at the Statue of Liberty, and the next I’m at the top of the Eiffel tower. It’s a mind bender! There again I am in Las Vegas, and anything goes! Welcome to Sin City, the strip, and the extraordinary. There may be no other place like it on earth! It is Viva Las Vegas, baby!

The Nevada city never sleeps. So, what are we waiting for? Let’s get that out there straight away. The glistening lights of The Strip are calling our name. From the moment you see the famous – Welcome to Vegas sign, you know that the fun will start. Perhaps there is nowhere other than the big guns of London, Paris and New York for volume of entertainment? Look at the residencies of the great and good of the entertainment and music world and you’ll soon see why.

And that’s all before we’ve even mentioned the hotels and their casinos. If you don’t spend all your money on the entertainment, then this city will grab you in other ways. Will you leave empty-handed? Well, only you decide that. What then does the city offer? We take a deep dive into the best things to do in Las Vegas and still come up with a few pennies in hand.

Around the Strip

You’re never short of things to do here, so once you’ve awoken, perhaps bleary eyed after a long flight, had a sumptuous hotel breakfast and a gallon of coffee you’re ready to explore. Some hotels are attractions in their own right. Places you’ll recognise, MGM Grand and Caesars Palace being two. If you can drag yourself away from the indulgencies of the casinos and slot machines inside, then a bus tour around the city is a great way to get acquainted with the sights. Said Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty I mentioned earlier, along with the dancing fountains of The Bellagio, make for interesting, if barmy, attractions. The High Roller Ferris wheel is another worth trying out. That’s at the LINQ Hotel.

As they say, #wheninvegas, so be sure to find the quirky Elvis chapel, and take in all 4.2 miles of The Strip. There’s enough to keep you going for a few days, even if you just take a stroll along it. If it’s museums you’re after, well, the Bada-bing, bada-boom of the Mob Museum will surprise and enthral you in equal measure.

It’s not all lights and glamour

As much as the lights, the sounds and shows are an appealing enough reason to visit, the best things to do in Vegas lie beyond the city and in the desert! If a helicopter ride sounds like your idea of exploring, then that’s one way to enjoy what’s on offer. Extended tours though are well worth it, especially when the places seen are literally among the best the US offers.

Let’s start with the Grand Canyon! See, doesn’t get much better than this. You can add other canyons such as Red Rock and Bryce, each with their own unique attraction and ambience. Oh, not forgetting Zion National Park.

Another trip away from the city is to the Hoover Dam. The man-made construction is quite something and is one of those trips that shows you the vulnerability of the city, God forbid, should anything go wrong!

Sin City it may be, but the best things to do in Las Vegas will certainly outstrip many a destination in terms of things to do. Perhaps it should be renamed Fun City? Just a thought.

Take in the shows, try the roulette wheel. Indulge in the food and the hotel excesses and come away from Las Vegas with a head full of memories and experiences. Now where were we? Oh yeah, at the top of the Eiffel tower in Vegas! Viva Las Vegas indeed.
