Overview

Combine the experience of a papal audience at the Vatican City with the splendour of Rome’s history and architecture.

Notable Roman monuments and squares en-route to Vatican City display the rich architectural splendour of a bygone era. In the Piazza della Republica you will find the particularly noteworthy Fountain of the Naiads, which has four reclining nymphs encircling a bronze statue of Glaucus (Greek sea-God). The Piazza del Popolo has long been popular with visitors. At the heart of the square is the Egyptian obelisk of Ramses II with magnificent fountains around the base.

The papal audience will take place at the heart of the Vatican. The piety, faith and the devotion of the gathering all contribute to the spiritual atmosphere.

Itinerary

En route you will cross many important landmarks including:

Piazza della Republica: In the middle of the square is the magnificent Naiadi Fountain featuring four reclining nymphs who represent the spirits of rivers and springs.

Piazza Barberini: Home of the Triton Fountain

Piazza del Popolo: In neoclassical style, the piazza has an Egyptian obelisk of Rameses II in its centre.

Castel Sant’ Angelo: Originally the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian, it was converted into a fortress for the Popes in the 6th century AD.

After you reach the Vatican, The Papal Audience will be held either in St. Peter’s Square, the St. Peter’s Basilica or the Audience Hall (depending on seasonal variations and the number of pilgrims).
