This tour gives you the opportunity to go inside the House of Roman Emperor Augustus which is only open to few visitors. Booking this tour will guarantee you entry to the domus and give you an insight about the life led by the Emperor. This was one of the residences of Caesar Augustus during his reign between 27 BC and 14 AD.
Accompanied by the knowledgeable guide, you will also visit the Colosseum, Rome’s most recognizable landmark; Palatine Hill, the most famous of the Seven Hills of Rome; and the Roman Forum that once glittered with festivals and triumphal processions.
You will meet your English speaking guide at Largo Gaetana Agnesi, above the 2nd floor of Colosseo metro stop. Your tour begins with a visit to the newly opened homes of Caesar Augustus and Livia. Opened in 2014 to mark the 2,000th death anniversary of Roman Emperor Augustus, archaeologists and historians worked intensively to bring back the colourful frescoes back to their original glory before opening the monument to the public.
Travel through time as you admire the well-preserved mosaics, columns, frescoes and the other decorations.
Livia was Emperor Augustus’ third wife and his trusted advisor. Her home adjoining the Emperor’s dwellings reflects his affection and dedication to their family.
From the Emperor’s home, you will climb to the top of the Palatine Hill, the most famous of the Seven Hills of Rome. From here you can admire views of the Roman Forum and Nero’s Circus Maximus where chariot races were once held.
Moving forward, you will head to the most majestic structure of the Roman Empire, the Colosseum. Walk past the regular lines with your skip-the-line access and enter the monument. Once inside your guide will lead an in-depth discussion on the history of the amphitheatre. The Colosseum is full of myriad tales of bravery, public life and royalty in ancient Rome. Despite the pillage of natural disasters, fires, pollution and wars, it is a living proof of the stunning architecture and strong masonry of ancient world, and has served as a model for stadiums around the world.
Next, your guide will take you along the Via Sacra (Sacred Way) to the Roman Forum. This area was once the hub of Rome and the venue for festivals and triumphal processions as Roman armies returned from wars. Inside the Forum, you will spot the Senate, old moneylender’s shop and the Temple of the Vestal Virgins.
Your tour ends at the Roman Forum.
