Our tips for London

  • Plan each day by area: Build each day around one timed booking, then add sights within walking distance. Pair the Tower of London with Tower Bridge and Westminster Abbey with Big Ben; the London Eye is just across Westminster Bridge.
  • Free museums: The British Museum, National Gallery, Natural History Museum and V&A have free general entry, which makes them easy rainy-day options. Special exhibitions and some tours are ticketed separately, and the British Museum is worth booking ahead, so check before you queue.
  • Use the river: Thames riverboats link Westminster, the London Eye, the Tower of London and Greenwich, so one journey doubles as sightseeing. River Bus journeys don’t count towards the Tube’s daily cap and sightseeing cruises are bought separately, so budget for them on top.
  • Day-trip timing: Allow a full day for Stonehenge tours, which commonly run 6 to 7 hours, and around 11 hours or more when combined with Windsor and Bath. Keep that evening free in case of traffic.
  • Is a pass worth it? Add up the single-ticket prices of the sights you actually plan to visit and compare the total with the pass price. A pass such as the London Pass only pays off if you use enough of its attractions.

Good to know

London uses pounds sterling (£), and contactless cards and phones are accepted almost everywhere. Visitors can tap a contactless card or phone on the Tube, buses and Elizabeth line; touch in and out where required, and use the same card or device every day so fares cap automatically. London runs on Greenwich Mean Time in winter and British Summer Time, one hour ahead, from late March to late October.

The weather is mild but changeable, so a light waterproof is useful year-round. Attraction opening hours vary by day and season, and some close on Christmas Day, so check your voucher before travelling. Only about a third of Tube stations are step-free, so if you need step-free access, check TfL’s step-free guide when planning your route.
