Don’t just point-and-look or drive-by these picture-perfect sites, take this comprehensive trip to discover the intriguing English countryside in all its glory.
Your day trip from London will start from Gloucester Road tube station, where you will meet your guide and board an air-conditioned coach. Leave the city behind and visit some of the most enduring landmarks of England.
Your first stop will be at the magnificent Georgian town of Bath. Developed mainly in the 18th century, Bath is an elegant city with beautiful Georgian buildings dotting the landscape. For six years it was home to author Jane Austen, with two of her famous novels – Persuasion and Northanger Abbey - set in Bath.
After a short coach ride, your guide will lead you on a walking tour, pointing out the major highlights and most beautiful parts of the city. You can enjoy free time to explore on your own. Visit the Roman Baths, constructed in 70 AD as a grand bathing and socializing complex and watch as the steam rises from the natural, bubbling hot springs. Literary lovers may also like to visit the Jane Austen Centre to learn more about this note-worthy author’s life and work. After that, you will board the coach and head out into the lush English countryside.
Your next stop is the beautiful Cotswold village of Castle Combe, voted the prettiest village in England. Castle Combe is a quintessential English village, typical of the Cotswold district. Stroll through the village where time has stood still and marvel at the homes built of local honey-coloured stone.
Next, you’ll head to the beautiful village of Lacock. Protected by the National Trust, Lacock dates back to the 13th century. Visit the charming hamlet and its restaurants, pubs, shops and cobblestone crannies, all of which are so well preserved that it feels like you are stepping back in time. These places have been featured in many popular films including Pride and Prejudice and Harry Potter.
Continue your journey through the English countryside to the final destination of your tour, Stonehenge, one of the wonders of the world. This amazing and still somewhat incomprehensible site is believed to have been built between 3000 and 2000 BC. The prehistoric stone circle and its surroundings are a designated UNESCO World Heritage site, having recently been restored back to its original unaltered landscape.
A small train will take you to the New Visitor Center, situated just a short distance from Stonehenge. See the huge monoliths, and ponder how they were put together and what they were used for. Your guide will explain the research and theories behind this amazing site, assisting you in understanding one of England’s greatest archaeological mysteries.
Ending your spectacular day in the English countryside at Stonehenge, you will return to London in an air-conditioned coach, arriving with enough time to enjoy an evening in the lively capital.
