You will be picked up from your hotel in an air-conditioned mini coach by your English-speaking driver/ guide and will head out towards the Grand Canyon. On the way you will stop for a continental breakfast.
The drive to the South Rim takes approximately six hours. You will have a photo-stop at the massive Hoover Dam, which crosses the dramaticBlack Canyon on the Colorado River. When the dam was built in 1935, it was the biggest in the world and, although long since surpassed, it is still a marvel of engineering. Behind the dam is sparkling Lake Mead, the largest man-made lake and reservoir in the US.
Your first view of the magnificent Grand Canyon will be at Mather Point, on the South Rim, The sight will take your breath away. Cliffs plunge a vertical mile below and a shining ribbon of water winds its way west on the canyon floor.
Your next stop will be at Yavapai Point which offers splendid views of the inner canyon. You will see Bright Angel Canyon, a side canyon on the northern side of the main chasm, and Phantom Ranch – a mini-resort.
There is also a small museum at Yavapai Point, which features exhibits on geology and explains how the Canyon was formed. The Grand Canyon Association also has a bookstore here.
At the Grand Canyon you will be provided with a deli-style sandwich lunch (with a choice of ham, turkey or vegetarian fillings) plus chips, cookies and fruit.
You will stroll along the canyon rim between Mather Point and the legendary El Tovar Hotel. Perched on the very edge of the chasm, this magnificent building dates from 1905 and has had many famous guests such as Theodore Roosevelt and Albert Einstein.
Visit the Grand Canyon Village District, which has many attractive buildings dating from the early 1900s, and stop at Hopi House (also an interesting piece of architecture) to browse through the Indian handicrafts and souvenirs on sale there.
You will spend around two hours at the Canyon altogether.
At the end of your delightful excursion, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Las Vegas.
