  • Overview & Itinerary
Overview Surajkund Lake is located on the border of Delhi and Haryana. This idyllic retreat is less than an hour’s drive from Delhi’s city centre. This large and important reservoir was built by the 10th century Rajput king – Surajpal Tomar. It is believed that a temple was built in honour of the sun (Suraj) god, which is how the lake got its name.

Today it is a picnic spot for the residents of Delhi looking to get away from the city. Fed by the annual rains the lake is a serene and beautiful spot.

For the first two weeks in February the area plays host to the world famous Surajkund Crafts Mela. The site then transforms into a vibrant, colourful and exotic place. Brightly coloured traditional costumes jostle for attention with hand made items from all over India add to the magic of this wonderful ancient locale.

The tour picks you up from your hotel and takes you, along the famous Delhi-Agra highway, to Surajkund. This lake retreat is about 20kms from the heart of Delhi and takes just under an hour to get you there.

The site is a refreshing contrast to the bustling metropolis of Delhi, with its quiet, shaded groves. You can stroll under the leafy trees to the attractive lake that is set in a hollow the rock hillsides.

The small local village community can be seen going about their daily lives. Men sprawled on their charpoys (rope and wooden cots) drawing on a hookah.

You will see the villager’s livestock grazing quietly and contentedly, presenting a view of the traditional rustic lifestyle of India. There is a very good chance you will get to see, the almost tame, peacocks with their dazzling and colour plumage.

There are several eating places where you can get a refreshing drink or a tasty bite to eat.

After this idyllic trip out of Delhi you will be taken back to your hotel.
