No visit to Delhi is complete without a visit to Qutub Minar - the tallest stone tower in India. The Qutub Minar, also spelled as Qutab Minar or Qutb Minar, is a minaret that forms part of the Qutb complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Mehrauli area of Delhi, India. The Minar is a 73-metre tall tapering tower of five storeys, with a 14.3 metres base diameter, reducing to 2.7 metres at the top of the peak.
Qutub-ud-din Aibak started it in 1199! Pulling down 27 Hindu and Jain temples and using their columns erected the attached Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque was also built by him. The construction of this tower of victory was started by the founder of the Mamluk Dynasty in Delhi, Qutb ud-Din Aibak and completed by his successor and son-in-law Iltutmish.
The surrounding archaeological area contains funerary buildings, notably the magnificent Alai-Darwaza Gate, the masterpiece of Indo-Muslim art (built in 1311), and two mosques, including the Quwwatu'l-Islam, the oldest in northern India, built of materials reused from Brahman temples.
