Overview
No visit to Delhi is complete without stopping by at the Kotla at least once and learning about its tryst with djinns! The Feroz Shah Kotla or Kotla was a fortress built by Sultan Feroz Shah Tughlaq to house his version of Delhi city called Ferozabad.
A pristine polished sandstone Topra Ashokan pillar from the 3rd century B.C. rises from the palace's crumbling remains, one of many pillars of Ashoka left by the Mauryan emperor; it was moved from Topra Kalan in Pong Ghati of Yamunanagar district in Haryana to Delhi under orders of Firoz Shah Tughlaq of Delhi Sultanate, and re-erected in its present location in 1356.
The sprawling Feroz Shah Kotla fort never ceases to amaze visitors with its numerous ruins of palace rooms, mosques, mysteries and peculiarities. The shadowy and mysterious world of Sufis, Fakirs and unknown saints, the place where belief and spirituality challenge the limits of logical explanations and a place where devotees come and write letters to the Djinns of Feroz Shah Kotla Fort, stick coins to the walls of the mosque, offer milk, sweets, fruits and even meats to the Djinns, all with the single objective of appeasing the ‘unhappy spirits’ and getting a long-cherished wish fulfilled!
