  • Overview & Itinerary

On this historical and cultural tour in northern Australia, visit Kakadu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for Aboriginal rock art and a variety of flora and fauna, the Aborigine-owned Arnhem Land and enjoy a cruise on the Yellow Water Billabong (a stagnant pool of water).

The Kakadu National Park is considered one of Australia’s richest repositories of Aboriginal art with over 5000 sites. Of these, Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock are said to have the best collection of rock art. The Park also has a fascinating range of flora and fauna and is particularly well known for its saltwater crocodiles. Arnhem Land is famous for rock art, Aboriginal settlements and great scenic beauty.

This tour is an excellent way to learn more about Australia’s Aboriginal history and culture and see the fascinating wildlife and topography that the country offers. Don’t miss it.

Day 1: Darwin – Kakadu National Park

You will be picked up from your hotel in Darwin and will travel in a luxury coach to Kakadu National Park.

Check into the hotel of your choice. Please see the additional information section for details about the accommodation.

Proceed in the coach to the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre and listen to commentary by your driver-guide about the history of the Park and the Aborigines. The shape of the building is circular to symbolize how the Aborigines sit in a circle when meeting. The centre has displays of rock art, bark paintings and Aboriginal craft among other displays.

You will then be taken to the departure point to board a boat for a guided cruise on the Yellow Water Billabong which is one of the highlights of this tour. As the boat moves down the South Alligator River, keep an eye out for saltwater crocodiles, freshwater mangroves and wild birds like eagles and kites. Listen to your guide tell you more about the habitation and the wildlife found in this region. After the cruise, which will last about two hours, you will be taken back to your hotel for lunch.

After lunch, board the coach to travel to Nourlangie Rock, a fascinating geological rock formation that has excellent examples of Aboriginal art. Many consider this Kakadu’s best site for rock art – see the animals and birds that are drawn on the rocks. The area is also famous for its walking trails, lookouts, and billabongs.

Return to your hotel for dinner (payable direct) and to spend the night.

Day 2: 4-Wheel Drive into Arnhem Land

After breakfast (payable direct), board a 4WD vehicle and accompanied by an Aborigine English-speaking guide, proceed to Arnhem Land which lies to the north-east of the Park. It is a vast stretch of land of great scenic beauty and contains some fascinating examples of Aboriginal rock art. Listen to your guide tell you more about the history of the original inhabitants of this land as you proceed to the Oenpelli Aboriginal Settlement. The Oenpelli is an Aborigine community and their settlement includes areas of the floodplains of the east-Alligator river and a rocky sandstone plateau.

There will be a lunch break at a suitable place and time.

After lunch, explore the area that is made up of beautiful coastlines, deserted islands, rivers teeming with fish, and green rainforests.

Later, return to your hotel in Kakadu for dinner (payable direct) and to spend the night.

Day 3: Ubirr - East Alligator River - Darwin

After breakfast (payable direct), you will have the option of taking a scenic flight over Arnhem Land (payable direct). Travel by coach to Ubirr, an outcrop of rocks in the Arnhem Escarpment which is famous for its rock art, some of which is thousands of years old. See drawing of animals and birds like catfish, mullet, goannas, long-necked turtles, pig-nosed turtles, rock ringtail possums and wallabies among others.

Later you will be taken to the departure point for the Guluyambi Cruise on the East Alligator River. Accompanied by an Aborigine guide, enjoy this informative cruise and learn more about the Aborigine people and why this land is special to them. After this cruise return to the land and visit the Bowali Visitor Centre which has displays on Kakadu’s ecology and Aboriginal art and culture. The centre has audio-visual presentations on the Aborigines and a resource centre with various reference books.

Board the coach and travel to the scenic Window on the Wetlands Visitor Centre which is located on Beatrice Hill. Enjoy a glass of complimentary wine here and appreciate the panoramic views of the wetlands below.
