Overview

Hampton Court Palace was built in the 16th century and was until the 18th Century a Royal Residence. The most famous and indeed notorious resident was Henry VIII.

Hampton Court Palace was passed to King Henry VII in 1528 and work immediately started to increase the size of the palace. The court of Henry VIII consisted of over 1000 people and he wanted a palace that could accommodate all of these people. He also added a large astronomical clock to the main gate (known today as Anne Boleyn Gate) and the clock still functions to this date.

The palace is a unique blend of Tudor and Baroque architectural styles. It is said that Hampton Court Palace was designed to rival the opulence and splendour of Versailles.

Visitors to Hampton Court Palace can visit the Great Hall, the last great banqueting hall built for the Monarchy and the Chapel Royal which has been in use for over 450 years. A range of exhibitions bring to live the fascinating courts of Henry VIII and the Tudors while the famous maze is one of the most popular features of the Palace.
