The holiday season in New York keeps the locals even busier than the rest of the year. And, it’s so easy for a person to get caught up with responsibilities related to the holidays that she forgets about all of the fantastic winter events in New York.
If that sounds familiar, then try slowing it down, setting aside some time for yourself, and participating in just one of the festive activities from the following list of New York’s best winter events:
The Ball Drop
Every year, at 11:59 p.m. on December 31st, the world-famous, illuminated ball atop One Times Square begins its slow descent. And, unsurprisingly, witnessing the ball drop is one of the most anticipated winter events in New York. Those lucky enough to attend start to party at 6:00 p.m. and receive a bunch of New Year’s party favours. So, finding a ticket for the Ball Drop becomes one of the most difficult things to do in New York the closer we get to the end of the year.
NYC Winter Jazzfest
Each year, in January, the NYC Winter Jazzfest comes to the Big Apple. And, spread between several popular music venues throughout the city, the festival showcases the most popular jazz musicians in the country. Furthermore, as the event draws to a close you can expect the usual two-day, jam-packed Greenwich Village spectacular to close out the festivities.
It’s one of the few winter events in New York that can actually force locals out of their apartments, other than a sunset jazz cruise.
Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show
An American tradition spanning well over 100 years, the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is one of those winter events in New York that thousands of individuals can’t wait to attend. Also, it’s a chance to see which pupper is the smartest, most handsome, and most graceful fluffball on the stage. The show usually takes place in February but may move due to unforeseen events, (covid for example). Check local listings to see when and where it’ll be held.
You can look out for Best in Show and the agility class, among many other highlights. So, who will take home the enormous purple and gold ribbon: The standard schnauzer, bichon frise, or the bull terrier?
Winter Village at Bryant Park
Another highly anticipated event of the year for New Yorkers is the opening of Winter Village at Bryant Park. The free ice skating, holiday shops, and festive atmosphere draw happy children and their parents from all over the city. But, you’ll also find live music, bumper cars, broomball, and a bunch of other fun activities. And, this year, you can take advantage of the warmth and hospitality of The Lodge, a rinkside bar and food hall. Yum!
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
While most people see the St. Patrick’s Day Parade as heralding the spring season, it actually stands as one of the most popular winter events in New York. Every year, New Yorkers hit the streets to watch the local fire department, servicemen, and marching bands parade around town. Then again, others simply use it as a reason to party with friends. Either way, it’s worth stepping out of your snuggly homes for a couple of hours to see it for yourself.
