Overview

Spend the day in lovely Carmona, a tiny town packed with history, where every building has a story to tell.

Perched majestically on a hill above the Guadalquivir Valley, Carmona has been occupied by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Moors and, finally, Christians.

During the day you will have a chance to trace the town’s rich heritage. See the Roman gate of Puerto de Sevilla and explore a Moorish fortress. Stroll through narrow, winding medieval streets past white-washed walls, palaces, and Renaissance mansions. View the monumental Baroque church of El Salvador with its grand facades and discover the ‘mujedar’ architecture which blends Western and Islamic influences.

See the lovely Gothic and Baroque churches, including Santa Maria, which stands on the site of a former mosque. Finally ascend to the Parador de Carmona for magnificent views over the fertile Andalusian plain.

Itinerary

At the start of your Carmona Sightseeing Tour, you should make your way to the meeting point at the Seville city center, C/ Zaragoza, nº1, 41001 Sevilla. You will be driven in a mini-bus to Carmona, around 34 km (21 miles) east of Seville. A guide will accompany you on the tour.

The town of Carmona stands in a magnificent position on a ridge overlooking the fertile Andalusian plain. The first sight that meets your eyes as you approach the town is the splendid 15th century tower that was constructed as a replica of Sevilla’s Giralda.

Carmona has been a settlement since prehistoric times and many different peoples - from the Romans to the Visigoths to the Moors and the Christians - have left their mark.

The town has three Moorish fortresses – one is now a Parador (a luxurious heritage hotel), and the other two are the Alcázar de la Puerta de Córdoba and Alcázar de la Puerta de Sevilla.

You will visit the Alcázar de la Puerta de Sevilla. As its name suggests, it is close to the Puerta de Sevilla – Spain’s best example of a Roman gate. Within the fortress complex you will see the old Keep and climb up the Torre del Oro (Tower of Gold) to enjoy stunning views of Carmona. You can also see the Court of Cisterns where there is an underground cistern featuring six skylights cut into the rock.

Next, you will have a chance to explore the city. As you follow the winding streets, you will see town’s famous convents and the monumental Baroque church of El Salvador, built between 1605 and 1720. Other interesting churches in Carmona include Santiago and San Felipe. The latter is a good example of the Andalusian Gothic style known as ‘mujedar’ – a fusion of Islamic and Western designs.

Your morning walk ends at Plaza San Fernando, once a Roman forum and now the city’s most important square, which boasts many elegant 17th-century houses.

Take a short break for lunch (payable direct) before resuming the tour. Carmona offers a range of restaurants and bars where you can taste a mouth-watering variety of tapas and dishes.

In the afternoon you will visit the Priory of Santa Maria which contains some of the finest religious architecture in the town. The Gothic Church of Santa Maria stands on the site of a former mosque and you can still see the ablutions patio once used by Muslim worshippers. Inside the building are three naves and several chapels as well as a magnificent 16th century altarpiece and lovely stained glass windows.

Your tour ends with a visit to the Parador de Carmona where you will see stupendous views over the Guadalquivir Valley.

At the end of the excursion you will be dropped back at your hotel in Seville City Center.
