The Everglades is a wetland wilderness based on a slow-moving system of rivers. Once the home of the Seminole Native Americans, it is a beautiful and fragile habitat made up of 1.2 million acres of grasslands and hardwood hammocks (tree islands). Alligators, American crocodiles, turtles, fish, snakes and exotic wading birds thrive in this subtropical environment.
Enjoy a 30-minute airboat ride through the untamed wilderness. You will glide across miles of river at speeds up to 50 mph, guided by an experienced captain. During the trip, you'll discover the secrets of the swamps and hear tales of how the Seminole and the Florida panther once coexisted in this lush wilderness. Look out for the native wildlife as you skim across the glassy water.
Back on land there are some fascinating exhibits awaiting you. The reptile exhibit features dozens of species both native and exotic to Florida. Along with the friendly turtles and iguanas, you will meet and learn about Cannibal, the 1000 pound alligator. Be sure to bring your camera, so one of your friends or family can capture you cradling a baby alligator.
You may visit the Exotic Wildlife exhibit arranged by Predators Unlimited. This is a separate organization that brings a variety of animals to the park each day to visit. They strive to educate and enlighten the public about endangered species like the Florida panther. You'll have the chance to get up close and personal with a whole range of different animals that might include panthers, leopards, and even birds of prey. The handlers are passionate about the care of their animals and are more than happy to answer any questions.
While you are at the Park, don't miss the 'Swamp Yard Island'. You and your family can interact with and feed many of the animals at this exhibit.
