Overview

The famous Rioja wine area is a must for wine lovers. You will be able to discover and learn about this unique and privileged region located in the south of the Basque country. You will visit the unique medieval village of Laguardia and the Capital city of the Basque country, Vitoria. We will also visit a traditional wine cellar to find out about their secrets.

Rioja is a region of Spain where the production of wine yields excellent results. It has achieved Denominación de Origen Calificada (Qualified designation of origin). Rioja wines are made from grapes coming from this area, but also from Navarre and the province of Álava. Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja and Rioja Alavesa are the three zones in which Rioja gets divided.

Rioja red wines are classified into four categories: Rioja, Rioja Crianza, Rioja Reserva and Rioja Gran Reserva. Rioja is the youngest type of wine with less than a year in an oak barrel. Crianza wines are aged at least two years (at least one of them in oak). Reserva wines are aged at least three years (at least one of them in oak). Finally, Rioja Gran Reserva wines are aged at least two years in oak plus three years in bottle.
