A magical expedition to an equally magical place, this tour of Montserrat will leave your inner travel bug very much satiated. Covering the highly venerated Santa Maria de Montserrat as well as the Montserrat Museum, it’s the perfect brew of history, spirituality, natural beauty and art that no one can miss.
The 11th century Santa Maria de Montserrat is a stunning Benedictine Abbey, towering from the top of the “serrated mountain” of the same name. One of the most significant Catholic pilgrimage sites around the world, the monastery is a gem in Catalan heritage and visited by people from far and wide – especially, for its legendary Black Virgin or la Moreneta. Considered to be a miraculous sanctuary by believers, the place is shrouded in local folklores and tales of spirituality. The monastery is the one of the oldest in the world and still functions to this day with around 70 monks. For architecture enthusiasts as well, this place is a treasure trove, thanks to the spectacular Roman Basilica and of course the Black Madonna. You can even experience the oldest musical choirs in Europe, the Escolanía. But that’s not all! Montserrat is not just for religious trips but is equally pleasurable for nature lovers with the gorgeous mountain offering unforgettable three sixty degree panoramas of Barcelona and Penedès, as well as brilliant hiking trails.
Besides, Montserrat is quite the den of history – from the medieval Abbey, which has witnessed the Spanish Civil War, to the Museum of Montserrat which is a den of archaeological as well as art history. From a 13th century BC Egyptian sarcophagus to a collection depicting the changing iconography of Our Lady of Montserrat over the years, the Museum hosts an impressive assemblage of celebrated works. With six permanent and absolutely unique collections and two exhibited ones, it is also home works by iconic artists like Picasso, Dalí, Caravaggio, Monet, Pissarro and many more. The Museum is a perfect balance to the sublime ambiance of the monastery, and together makes for a consummate experience that will leave you feeling enriched!
