  • Overview & Itinerary

Alkmaar is an ancient city, famous for its cheese market. On this tour, explore the market, see cheese carriers in their traditional costumes and cheese piled high on the cobblestone square. Learn more about the old market way of life, where bidders traditionally compete by clapping their hands and seal a deal with a stern clap. Once a buyer has bought the cheese, men in white uniforms carry the wheels of cheese to a 14th century Weigh House to tally the bill.

This tour also includes a visit to Schermerhorn, a village famous for its old windmills, and the medieval town of Edam where you will visit a cheese factory.

The tour starts from 26, Damrak in Amsterdam. Accompanied by a guide, you will travel in a coach to Alkmaar, an ancient city whose cheese market is a huge draw for tourists.

As you pass cheese carriers in their traditional costumes and observe cheese being sold as it used to in the old days, you will get a feel of ancient Dutch markets. See the 14th century Weigh House where the cheese was weighed once sold. After the cheese market, you will visit Schermerhorn, a village famous for its old windmills.

On the way back to Amsterdam, you will travel via the medieval town of Edam to visit a cheese factory where cheese is still made the traditional way.

The tour ends at 26, Damrak.

    • Very interesting

Alkmaar is a quaint and picturesque little town and while I found the process and tradition of the cheese market interesting, the crowds made for difficult viewing. We never did...
