  • Overview & Itinerary

    Overview

This full day tour through the most famous spots in the Golden Circle also takes you into the clear blue waters above the Silfra fissure to see the very spot where the American and European tectonic plates meet. You’ll start off your day with stops at the Geysir geothermal region and Gullfoss waterfall, two other impressive water features in the scenic Icelandic landscape. The superheated Geysir, after which all other geysers are named, erupts with a massive column of steam and boiling water to reach over 70m in height. Gullfoss works in the opposite direction, tumbling over a tiered rock formation into a crevice before appearing to vanish completely below ground.

You will visit the Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site and home of the Silfra fissure. This lava formation deep underwater has incredible visibility, perfect for snorkeling above the great continental divide below.

    Itinerary

Your tour begins when your expert guide picks you up at your hotel in Reykjavik. From there, you will embark on a scenic drive outside of the city towards the Golden Circle, a 186-mile (300-km) scenic loop that circles the countryside around the capital.

See the famous Geysir region, a geothermic hotspot where the ground bubbles, hisses, and steams as superheated water is forced to the surface by the rushing hot lava below. The home of the most famous natural columnar eruption of water and steam – the original Geysir, after which all other geysers are named – is in this very park.

A quick and picturesque stroll away is Gullfoss waterfall, a stunning 32m tiered cascade that tumbles deep into a crevice, seemingly disappearing into the centre of the Earth only to reappear some distance later as a roaring river.

Your guide will then lead you back on a short drive to the beautiful Þingvellir National Park. Þingvellir is a UNESCO heritage sight witnessing the birthplace of the world’s oldest existing parliament, the meeting of the North American and European tectonic plates, and the shores of the largest natural lake in Iceland.

The Silfra fissure and lava field is found in this very park, and with visibility of somewhere between 65-85 meters in the summer and 80-100 metres in the winter, the stunningly clear blue waters lead to great views of the two plates converging. These are perfect conditions for your snorkeling adventure, and despite the cold temperatures you’ll be adequately suited up, all gear provided, to make the most of this impressive sight.

At the end of your tour, you will be returned to your hotel in Reykjavik to enjoy a pleasant evening on your own time.
