You will be dropped off to your hotel.
You will be picked up from your hotel in Reykjavik at the scheduled time and taken to see popular Golden Circle attractions. Enjoy a scenic drive to the Thingvellir National park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Experience a cross-section of Iceland's natural wonders and geological phenomena at the renowned park, an area of historical and geological significance.
Thingvellir is the meeting point of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plate and boasts the world’s oldest parliament. See Lake Thingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland. The whole area is covered with birch bushes, a common sight in these areas.
The next stop is Haukadalur valley geothermal area, a geologic wonder of mud pots, hot springs and geysers. The famous hot spring Geyser lies dormant at the moment. But Strokkur – another main attraction of this area – is very much alive, spouting water that reaches up to 25 meters high every 5-8 minutes. Stroll through the fascinating geyser area and explore on your own.
Gullfoss, the golden waterfall, is the last site on the Golden Circle route and is the most visited waterfall in Iceland. The sight of the roaring water rushing into the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon is definitely something to see.
From the Golden Circle, you will be driven through the agricultural area of south Iceland towards ring road, nr. 1. On a clear day, Mt. Hekla is visible in the distance. The next stop is the picturesque Seljalandsfoss waterfall, which you can enjoy from both sides. Running from the Eyjafjallajökull glacier, the water in Skógafoss has come a long way. This impressive cascade falls 60 meters into the calm Skógará River.
The last stop for the day is the black sand beach Reynisfjara. The Atlantic Ocean really shows its force here, so adherence to guidelines provided by the tour guide is advised. The basalt pillars Reynisdrangar, rising from the sea just off shore, is the source of many Icelandic folklores. Don’t miss the basalt column cave before you leave the black sand beach.
You will be spending the night at a country hotel on the outskirts of the small coastal town of Vík where you can see the Northern lights, if the conditions are right.
You will be picked up from your hotel and driven towards the east through enchanting lava fields and desert glacier sands. Take in the dramatically changing landscape as you head towards the crystal cave in Vatnajökull.
After a safety briefing, step into the crystal cave in Vatnajökull for 45 minutes and admire the magical blue ice. Certified glacier guides will be by your side at all times, ensuring your safety. New ice caves are formed every winter and the vibrant blue colour appears when the air is pressed out of the ice and it becomes completely dense.
The temperature in the glacier is well below freezing point. Thus a degree of flexibility is accommodated in the tour to ensure your comfort and convenience. There is a possibility of the cave visit being postponed to day 3, if the guide estimates the conditions to be better then.
After the crystal cave, you will be heading to the glacier lagoon, Jökulsárlón. The iceberg-strewn lagoon and a beach in the vicinity are sites of surreal beauty in the twilight of the afternoon. Sometimes seals can be spotted in the lagoon.
You will be heading to the hotel in Skaftafell area where you can settle in for the night. The darkness of the countryside offers a great opportunity for Aurora spotting, so there is a chance of seeing the famous Northern Lights.
You will be picked up from your accommodation after breakfast and taken to the Vatnajökull glacier again for an exhilarating hike on one of its outlet glaciers. You will be visiting Fjadrargljufur Canyon which will be visited on the way back to Reykjavik. You will be driven back to Reykjavik in the evening. Hotel drop-offs will take place between 8pm and 11pm, depending on the weather.
