Overview

The Cheung Chau Island tour offers the perfect opportunity to explore this beautiful island and soak up the culture and traditions as well as visiting the historical sites. This tiny dumbbell-shaped Island is a unique self-contained world, possessing a fascinating cultural heritage. Cheung Chau is also the perfect getaway to be explored on foot or by bike because it doesn't have any cars! Join the locals for some fine alfresco dining at night. The island still has a thriving fishing community and their Bun Festival with its parade - featuring costumed children ‘floating’ in the air - is unique.

Visit this magical outlying island of Hong Kong and enjoy a plethora of outdoor activities.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel in Hong Kong if it is within the list of select hotels. If it isn’t, you have to assemble at the pick-up point notified to you by the local activity operator by 8:00am. Here you will board a ferry for a relaxing cruise to the Cheung Chau (Long Island) which are about 12 kilometers southwest of the busy Hong Kong Island. You will be accompanied by an English-speaking guide.

Enjoy walk down the beautiful Tung Wan Beach renowned for its clear water quality and soft sands. It is popular for windsurfing and canoeing. The 3,000-year-old Bronze Age rock carvings can be seen here with geometric graphics and abstract animal images.

The tour continues as a walking tour through the old main street Pak She Street and San Hing Street, where you will witness the daily lifestyles of typical island communities. “Spirit of fertility” trees, clan and community associations, balconies of shop-houses flank a narrow pedestrian lane, which sell a variety of dry food, dry fish, paper offering, grocery, vegetables, farmed pungent purplish-brown shrimp paste.

You will then board a wooden sampan and enjoy a 20-minutes sampan ride to cruise inside the Typhoon Shelter where you can see its historical and cultural aspects of old fishing communities to West Bay, Cheung Po Tsai Cave. The mysterious cave is reputed to have been the hideout of notorious 19th Century pirate Cheung Po Tsai (Prince of pirates), who is said to have commanded 20,000 followers and a fleet of 600 junks.

The sampan ride will be followed by a visit to the Tin Hau Temple, which was built in the 17th Century. The temple attracts many followers and the fishing community who come to worship the Goddess of Sea, especially during the annual festival. Local people come to the temple for guidance by shaking the prediction box.
