Overview

Soak in the magical transcendence of Montserrat and combine it with an unforgettable ride on the Sant Joan Funicular for a truly remarkable day out in Barcelona. Montserrat stands out for two reasons - it is home to one of the oldest Benedictine Abbeys in the world and also offers sensational views of Barcelona as well as Penedès from the summit. The monastery at Montserrat, the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, is an integral site of pilgrimage for Catholics, being home to the iconic la Moreneta or Black Virgin - one of the few Black Madonnas existing in Europe. The site is a treasure trove for both religious believers as well as historical enthusiasts - the 11th century abbey comes with spectacular Renaissance and Gothic architecture and has also played quite a significant role in the Spanish Civil War. Besides, Montserrat is quite popular with hikers and nature lovers as well, with the “serrated mountain” offering breath taking treks and exploration routes.

Your real brush with the stunning beauty of Montserrat, though, will definitely happen on the Sant Joan Funicular ride. It starts at the heart of the monastery, the funicular takes you in a steep, uphill journey to the summit, presenting you with ravishing views of the monastery, Barcelona as well as the Pyrenees. On clear days, you can even see as far as Mallorca, a view that can barely be contained in words. Standing at around 1200 feet above sea level, lose yourself to the thrill of this panorama as Mama Nature gets you the perfect respite from the conundrums of daily life. We really couldn’t think of a better way to take a break!
