Visit Bangkok’s National Museum, the largest museum in Southeast Asia and which also boasts the largest collection of Thai art and artifacts in the country. Dating back to 1874, the National Museum offers a superb introduction to Thailand's cultural and artistic heritage. Spanning the ages - from prehistory to the present - are sculptures, Khon masks, ceramics, clothing and textiles among other items. There are some wonderful examples of Thai architecture, including sacred chapels, red teak houses and beautiful pavilions. The museum's star exhibit is the Inscription No.1 from the Sukhothai era. Supposedly written by the great King Ramkhamhaeng himself, it is regarded as the Thailand's first work of literature.
At Bangkok’s National Museum learn about Thailand’s culture, history and religion, all in a day.

The Gallery of Thai History is located in the Sivamokhaphiman Hall, with the Prehistory Gallery at the rear of the building. The History of Art collection is displayed in the South and North Wings and the Minor arts, Royal Cremation Chariots and Ceremonial Objects are exhibited nearby in other buildings within the Grand Palace compound.
The National Museum collection encompasses a wide range of religious and secular art found throughout the country. Items from pre-historic times, through the Srivijaya, Dvaravati, Khmer Kingdoms and the Sukhothai, Ayutthaya and Rattanakosin periods of Thai history can be found here. These include Neolithic tools, painted pots and bronze objects unearthed in the northeast. Thai Buddhist art exhibits feature images in stone, bronze and terracotta as well as illustrated scripture books manuscript cabinets.
The Museum also has a large collection of miscellaneous items such as Thai and Chinese ceramics, theatrical costumes, palanquins, weapons and assorted items used in royal households.
