A significant portion of visitors to Canada start with a Vancouver trip. It’s lush greenery, relatively clean city streets, and friendly locals attract visitors from all over the world who would like to experience a Vancouver vacation.  Most of these world travellers visit Stanley Park, a massive urban greenspace that offers spectacular views from its seawall. Others head straight to Gastown or Granville Island for a little shopping, dining, and local culture. Still, some visitors looking for a little adventure gravitate towards Vancouvers iconic suspension bridges, like the Capilano and Lynn Canyon bridges. If you want to get out into the pristine natural surroundings accessible just outside of the city, these bridges offer some of the best photo opportunities around. It’s what to do in Vancouver when you want one of those iconic nature shots. But, if Mother Nature isn’t on good terms with you, you’ll find a vibrant nightlife, burgeoning art scene, and plenty of other Vancouver attractions to satisfy your needs. Besides, getting out there and meeting the locals at bars, galleries, and museums is one of the most interesting things to do in Vancouver!

Things to do in Vancouver

OUR TIPS FOR Vancouver

  • Tip of the Iceberg. While you may already understand that it’s customary to tip your waitress or bartender, that’s not the end of the story. The tipping culture in Vancouver runs so deep that you’re expected to tip your maid, concierge, taxi driver, and their grandmothers!
  • Silent Escape. Vancouver is seemingly plopped down right in the middle of a forest.Make sure you escape the city for a little peaceful silence and natural beauty!
  • Say “Adios” to Ola. Uber, Ola, and similar apps do not exist in Vancouver!  So, if you need a car or simply don’t want to take mass transit, you will have to use the local taxis or a car sharing app like Car2Go or Zipcar!

Best Time To Visit

Despite its location just north of the U.S-Canada border, Vancouver’s winter climate is moderated by the nearby Pacific Ocean.  While April through October probably represents the best time to plan a Vancouver vacation, the city receives visitors year-round.  The heat during the height of summer remains mild and the rainy winters are still tolerable.  But, you should plan your attire according to expected weather and layer-up so you can add or remove clothing during any sudden changes in the climate.  If you are looking for a deal on hotels and other amenities, March through May and September through November offer a unique opportunity for savings.

Getting Around

You can discover everything Vancouver has to offer by using the city’s mass transit system or taxis. Here are the primary modes of transportation for a visitor:

  • One of the most unique and popular ways of getting around Vancouver is by using the SkyTrain.  It has decent coverage of the downtown area and offers some spectacular views of the city!  If this is your first Vancouver trip, then you should definitely try it out!
  • Busses present one of the best options for travel to and within Vancouver.  The busses arrive at their stops very frequently and you’ll find them rather clean and safe.  They also represent one of the best ways to get into the city from the suburbs.
  • Vancouver stands as one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world!  You’ll find plenty of places to rent a bike for anywhere from an hour to several days.  And, if you’re travelling with your sweetheart during your Vancouver vacation, you can even opt for a tandem bike.
Stay Safe

Vancouver represents a relatively safe travel destination. Still, it’s a large city and suffers from issues common to all metropolises.  Here are a few safety tips:

  • If you are visiting from America, then you already know how to call the police. The number is the same in Canada as it is in the United States:911.It’s unlikely that you’ll need to know it, but you never can be too careful.
  • While your personal safety is practically assured within tourist areas. The safety of your belongings is not.Make sure you keep your bags, purses, and money belts on you at all times, especially in parks and transit depots.
  • Plan ahead and make sure your cell phone will work in Vancouver. Not only is it one of the best deterrents; but, it also represents your lifeline should you run into any trouble. If you find yourself feeling unsafe walking at night, stand tall, keep your head on a swivel, and look alert.
