Itinerary

  • You will be picked up from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle at the scheduled time in the morning for the start of your Pingxi tour. Step back in time with a visit to the historic coal mining town Pingxi. Enjoy a drive through New Taipai City, then head into the countryside, winding along mountain roads into the Pingxi district.

Pingxi played a crucial role in Taiwan’s 20th-century coal boom. Kickstart the tour by participating in an age-old tradition – flying a Sky Lantern. The ancient custom is believed to bring good health and fortune. Your guide will explain the origin of the tradition and how it’s become the focal point of the annual Taiwan Lantern Festival.

Make your way to the 20th century Shifen Old Street, a lively street set around the historic Pingxi rail line. Hear how famous Taiwanese movies such as Hou Hsiao-Hsien’s ‘Dust In The Wind’ were filmed here and pose for photos on the atmospheric street. The Pingxi Branch Rail Line extends 12.9 kilometers through Keelung River Valley from Sandiaoling to Jingtong stations. Shifen is one of the stops along the line.

See the picturesque Shifen Waterfall, on the upper parts of Keelung River. It is often called the “Little Niagara of Taiwan” and is one of the most famous waterfalls of the city.

After the tour, you will be dropped off to your hotel in the afternoon. You can spend the rest of the day sightseeing on your own.
