The Czech people consume the most beer in the world, and a visit to Prague just wouldn’t be complete without touring the beer halls that the Republic is famous for!
Spend the evening indulging in the country’s best brews! Visit Zizkov, the part of the city that has the highest concentration of beer halls. Sample the famed Pilsner Urquell as well as some local microbrews, and even get the chance to tap your own beer!
As you drink, you’ll hear of local stories and history, savor typical Czech tapas and gain a deep appreciation of Prague and its rich history, beer, and food.
Sample the finest Czech brews on the excellent Prague Beer and Czech Tapas Tour. Foray into the city’s best beer halls with your expert local guide. You will meet your guidein front of the statue of the Czech patron saint – King Wenceslas – on top of Wenceslas square (Vaclavske namesti).
The excursion includes tram and Metro rides and visits to five beer sanctuaries where you’ll sample five beers (0.3 L) and four typical Czech “beer tapas”.
While appreciating delicious Czech craft beers, you’ll also hear about exciting moments in the country’s history and learn about Czech lifestyle from the Middle Ages through Communism to the present. During the tour, you will be able to enlarge your beer mat collection and even buy beer cosmetics! Guests who want to enjoy the experience but are not beer-drinkers can order non-alcoholic beverages.
At the start of the tour, your guide will tell you about Wenceslas Square, where many demonstrations took place in the Communist era and also during the Velvet Revolution of 1989 that brought down totalitarian rule.
You will then take a tram and arrive at a typical beer hall. On the way you will pass the city’s tallest television tower adorned with “crawling babies” by the famous Czech contemporary artist David Cerny.
The beer hall is located in the Prague 3 Zizkov district. Despite being home to the greatest density of pubs in the city, this area is not frequented by many tourists. The pub you visit has been voted “the most popular in Prague” by Czech beer fans and offers more than 10 different kinds of beer.
In this beer hall, visitors can see pictures of the Communist Czech presidents, so naturally this is the best place for your guide to tell you stories about life under Communism. You will also taste marinated streaky pork in chilli and beer, served with horseradish and mustard.
Next up on your beer tour, you will hop on the tram in search of a truly hidden gem at Vinohrady, where, apart from a jolly and cozy atmosphere, it serves up to 27 different Czech microbrewery beers. You will also savour some pickled sausage, one of the most famous Czech beer snacks served with onion and pepper.
Take the metro back to the Old Town and visit the pub where the first Pilsner Urquell draught was tasted in 1843. Sample Pilsner Urquell from a tank (not keg), which assures that the beer contains less CO2 and has a much better taste.. Along with the beer, enjoy finely smoked pork neck with homemade potato pancakes and Bohemian-style white cabbage.
There is no better place to tell beer-related stories in Prague than this venue. Part of the pub is located inside a former church that was destroyed in the Hussite Wars during the 15th century! You will also learn about the "birth" of Pilsner beer, one of the world’s most famous beers and the story behind “Pinka’s nightmare”. In addition to the delicious Pilsner beer, you will taste potato pancakes with gravy – scrumptious!
After Pilsner Urquell, you shift gears and head to a rather cosy new brewery pub near the Old Town square, then head to the beer hall where executioners would go a drink in the medieval ages! As you savor another of the best Pilsner beers in Prague, you will learn about life in medieval times.
Next, clear your head with a walk to The Pub where you can tap your own beer! One glass of Gambrinus Excedent (0.3 L), one of the most popular local beers, is also included in the tour. At this venue, you can sample pickled sausage, probably the most famous Czech beer snack.
Your guide will either finish the tour at this pub or take you to the Old Town Square around the corner. It’s your call! As there are too many good beer halls to fit into one tour, at the end of the excursion you will be given a map of Prague denoting other renowned pubs.
The tour ends at Husova 232/10 st., Old Town, Prague 1
