Further on, proceed to the University City located in Coyoacan borough in the southern part of Mexico City. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the university encloses the Olympic Stadium, the Cultural Centre, an ecological reserve, the Central Library and some museums. Interestingly, the university was built on a bed of solidified lava to replace the scattered buildings in downtown Mexico City. Continue to the waters of the Xochimilco Canals where you can take a traditional boat cruise down ancient Aztec canals. The place is famous for its extended series of canals on the ancient Lake Xochimilco. Sail on colorful trajineras, a traditional boat between chinampas (floating gardens – an ancient Mesoamerican agriculture) covered with flowers. The shores of Xochimilco Canals are lined with houses and docks, and are a favorite haunt of Mexican families and tourists on the weekends. Further on, head to the impressive colonial district of Coyoacan and take a walk down the Francisco Sosa Street lined with architectural marvels from the 16th century.
