The Imperial city of Toledo – A World Heritage city - appears like one large museum. Hardly any other town is so well conserved in its historical style. Toledo was once the capital of the Spanish Empire, and the old city stands on a mountaintop surrounded by the River Tagus, history is truly tangible here.
Just 70 kilometers from Madrid, the ‘Imperial Toledo’ is a city encircled by the river and home to three different cultures – Christian, Moorish and Jewish – that coexisted together for centuries. Their influences have left many architectural and artistic reminders all over the city. Toledo Cathedral is ranked among the greatest Gothic structures in Europe.
The best way to explore Toledo is to take a long walk through it and marvel at the buildings dating back centuries.
You will be picked up from designated meeting point. Accompanied by a multi-lingual guide, you will travel by deluxe air-conditioned coach to the imperial city of Toledo.
On this visit to Toledo you will get to explore and see many architectural and artistic styles such as Mudejar, Gothic, and Renaissance. You will see many of the great Renaissance painter El Greco’s works inside different churches and monasteries around the town. You will also get to see the world-famous art of damascening; the decorative application of gold or silver on iron or steel.
Some of the important and famous sites you will visit are:
The Toledo Cathedral contains many famous works of art including those of El Greco. It is one of the three 13th century High Gothic cathedrals in Spain and is considered to be the magnum opus of the Gothic style in Spain. The interior is as grand as the exterior and contains a mass of magnificent decorations, rooms and objects to be admired.
St. Tome Church: See the spectacular Mudejar Tower and El Greco’s most famous painting“The Burial of Count Orgaz”.
Synagogue de Santa Maria La Blanca: is a beautiful construction in the mudejar style located in the medieval Jewish quarter of Toledo.
Mosque of El Cristo de la Luz: Macho was a famous contemporary sculptor. His home is now a museum containing some of his best known sculptures and is situated right in the heart of the Aljama, Toledo's old Jewish Quarter.
The Monastery of San Juan of the Kings: A 15th century monastery in the Gothic-Spanish-Flemish style was built on the orders of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.
