Soweto: Your first stop will be at this largest township in South Africa, situated just 15 kilometres southwest of Johannesburg.
Your coach will drive you past African merchants of traditional medicines, a typical four-roomed dwelling, an informal settlement, affluent suburbs, a creche and an old-age home.
The other highlights of this tour include:
• Mandela House: This is a small house where Nelson Mandela lived with his first wife. See a collection of memorabilia, paintings and photographs of the Mandela family.
• Hector Peterson Memorial: A tribute to the 13-year old boy who was killed during the student uprising in Soweto.
• Celebrity houses in a plush suburb called Beverly Hills, where Soweto's professionals live, from attorneys, doctors, journalists, teacher, social workers and musicians to sports personalities.
Your visit will also include a full view of Soweto from the vicinity of Baragwanath Hospital, the largest in the world.
Gold Reef City: Spend some enjoyable hours in this fascinating theme park in Johannesburg, built to replicate an old mining town. Enjoy the abundance of recreational activities here or try your luck at the 24-hour open casinos.
You will also be taken on an exciting trip into the belly of earth (220 meters down) to witness demonstrations on how gold was mined in the bygone era.
Watch the colourfully draped tribal dancers swaying to the tune of traditional African music. You could sample authentic African delicacies at one of the theme restaurants (own expense). The speciality shops at the Art and Crafts Centre houses amazing art works which you can take home as a souvenir.
Apartheid Museum: The tour then continues to the Apartheid Museum. Entry cards are assigned based on the colour of your skin and you’ll enter through steel gates specifically allocated to you. See a room filled with white rope nooses, each one used for the 121 ‘politicals’ hanged by the apartheid regime. You will also come across posters and T-shirts from the first democratic elections. Using film, text, audio and live accounts, the museum paints a vivid picture of life under apartheid and the struggle of Nelson Mandela and hundreds of South Africans for equality.
At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel/closest drop-off point.
