Overview

Known as the Jacaranda City for all the purple blossom-bedecked trees which line its thoroughfares, Pretoria is a lovely, quiet city.

This beautiful city lined with relics of outstanding architecture has attracted many tourists to South Africa. On this tour, acquaint yourself with the works of Sir Herbert Baker, the dominant force in South African architecture for two decades. His masterpiece is the Union Buildings - office of the South African government and the President of South Africa. Standing at Meintjies Kop, just like he envisioned, the Building overlooks Pretoria the same way the Acropolis of Athens does. At Church Square, the hub of Pretoria, you will find statues of the President of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger. The imposing granite structure called the Voortrekker Monument is the national icon for Afrikaans South Africans.

Take this tour of Pretoria - a city embroiled in history and lined with stately buildings.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel and taken in an air conditioned vehicle for a sightseeing tour of Pretoria. A professional English speaking guide will accompany you on this tour.

Pretoria is informally known as ‘the Jacaranda City’, for its beautiful purple lined streets when the jacaranda trees are in full bloom. Take this opportunity to stand in front of the heart of the country overlooking a city built on passion and determination, where buildings are architecturally significant and a nation congregates around statues of past leaders.

The highlights of this tour of the 'Jacaranda City' are:

Church Square: This is the historic centre of the city of Pretoria. Its most prominent feature is the statue of the Boer leader and president of the South African Republic Paul Kruger at its centre.

Voortrekker Monument: Prominently situated south of the city centre is the Voortrekker Monument, built in 1949 to commemorate the Voortrekkers, or the Boers, who in the mid 19th century pushed northward into unknown territory. A ponderous square granite structure 130ft high stands on a base 430ft sq. wide. It is a national icon for Afrikaans South Africans.

Union Buildings: Sir Herbert Baker designed Union Buildings - the State President’s offices. The Union Buildings form the official seat of the South African government and also house the offices of the President of South Africa. The imposing buildings built from light sandstone were designed by the architect Sir Herbert Baker in the English monumental style.

City Hall: The City Hall in Pretoria is an imposing structure, one that occupies a whole block. It has an enormous clock-tower with 32 bells. Outside the entrance are statues of Andries Pretorius and his son Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, founder of Pretoria.
