  • Tipping Point. There’s no need to tip your waiters or taxi drivers in Helsinki.A service charge is added to your bill at restaurants and bars.But, if you receive especially good food or service, then feel free to leave a little something extra.
  • The Sound of Silence. As you might expect, cultural norms in Finland deviate from those of other countries.For example, if you ask a Finn a question, you might encounter an uncomfortable silence before you get your answer.That’s because Finns don’t want to interrupt.
  • Salmiakki Koskenkorva. For short, this original, Finnish cocktail goes by the name of Salmari, which is much easier to pronounce.It’s a mixture of vodka and salty licorice.You should try it at least once.But, if you don’t like it, just know that you’re not alone!

Because of Helsinki’s harsh winter conditions, the best time to visit the city is between June and September.  You’ll enjoy longer sunlight hours, happier locals, and a mild climate.  If you consider yourself an outgoing type of person, then the month of August presents the ideal atmosphere for meeting new people because most of the city’s festivals are held during this month.  Arriving in Helsinki during the shoulder seasons is pretty dicey because the weather can be rather unpredictable.  And, unless you are a winter extreme sports enthusiast or dislike the sun in general, the coldest months are to be avoided.
