In 1962, the Cuc Phuong was established as the first national park of Vietnam. As you explore further, you’ll come across ancient trunks with thick clusters of roots, parasitic plants and indigenous creepers. Many tree species found here have been introduced from Burma, Borneo and India.
Hike into the dense forest of the national park and spot thousand-year-old dracontomelum and parashorea trees surrounded with coral, vanilla, snow-white and butterfly orchid blooms. Do visit Nguoi Xua (a cave of early man), ancient tombs with Neolithic remains and the Hang Dan cave known for its bat population.
From Hanoi, travel southeast to Cuc Phuong National Park. Established in 1962, Cuc Phuong National Park is considered to be one of Vietnam's most beautiful and important nature reserves.
Cuc Phuong is home to a wealth of beautiful tropical birds, many of them endemic to Vietnam and Indochina. Some of the 307 species of rare birds that you might encounter are the Silver-pheasant, Red-collared Woodpecker, Brown Hornbill, Bar-bellied Pita and so on.
Besides, Cuc Phuong is also home to many different species of amphibians, insects, and reptiles, many of them endemic to Cuc Phuong and Vietnam. Some species are common with interesting characteristics, such as the Viper, green tree frog and stick-insects.
The ancient forest contains almost 2000 species of trees and amongst them lives some amazing and rare animals including the Clouded leopard, Delacour etc. Start your journey visiting a Endangered Primate Rescue Center where rare primates are being saved from poachers and they are prepared to live again in their natural habitat.
Tour the centre which is run by Vietnamese and German biologists and observe the different primate species living here, such as gibbons, langur, loris. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant in the centre.
After that, drive 20km to the starting point of the round trekking trail which leads 7km through the jungle. Visit a pre-historic cave along the way, where remains of human skeleton and stone tools have been found dating back as far as 7,500 years.
