Overview

Enjoy jaw-dropping views of the famous Perito Moreno glacier on this exciting full-day tour.

One of the largest glaciers in Southern Patagonia, Perito Moreno is an unforgettable sight. Towering some 180 feet above a lake, this enormous mass of blue ice has a frontage of more than 3 miles. Thunderous booms are common as huge chunks break off and fall into the water.

This tour takes you right in front of the wall of the glacier and you can also enjoy stunning views from strategically placed walkways in Los Glaciares National Park.

Make sure you have your camera with you as the photo-opportunities are ‘out of this world’!

Itinerary

For your Visit Perito Moreno Glacier – From El Calafate trip you will be picked up at your hotel in El Calafate at around 08:00am.

You will drive to Puerto Bajo de las Sombras (Port under the Shadows) from where you can see spectacular views of Glacier Perito Moreno. Perito Moreno is one of the largest of the 356 glaciers in the Southern Patagonian ice-field. The front is about 3 miles (5km) wide and the height of the glacial wall above the water is around 180 feet (60m) – with much more of it under water.

The glacier itself moves about 6 ½ feet (2m) a day and is in a constant struggle against the waters of Lago Argentino (Lake Argentino). Tension between the water and ice causes the glacier to crack and huge chunks of ice break off into the waters below. The breaking ice sounds like gunshots and the noise is magnified by an echo effect.

From Puerto Bajo de las Sombras, you will then be driven on to the Los Glaciares National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). In the National Park you will take a 40-minute walk across the Brazo Rico (Rico Arm). On the way, you will pass in front of the face of the Perito Moreno Glacier and can appreciate the imposing glacier and the height of its massive walls.

You will also stop at the boardwalk in front of the glacier where you will enjoy unforgettable views of this gigantic ice feature.

On this tour you can actually get close enough to the glacier to feel the cold that it generates. You can also enjoy the beautiful environment surrounding the Perito Moreno. This includes the Lago Argentino which has a special 'milky' color due to the mineral particles created by the friction of the glacier against the rocky bed.

At the end of the tour you will be driven back to your hotel in El Calafate.
