  • Overview & Itinerary

Take time out from Barcelona to discover the mythical Mount Montserrat, the spiritual centre of Catalonia and a place of pilgrimage. See the unique natural environment of the natural park of Mount Montserrat with its singular rock formations and enjoy stupendous views of the Pyrenees.

Visit the Shrine of the Black Virgin, patron saint of Catalonia and hear legend of how St Peter deposited a statue of the Virgin, carved by St Luke here. You'll find hidden paths and stairways and caves, chapels and hermitages scattered all over the mountain as well as the Abbey of Montserrat, a Benedictine Monastery with almost 1000 years of history.

Taste four types of special drinks prepared by the monks and watch an audiovisual presentation where you can learn all about the history of the Abbey and its inhabitants. Spend time exploring on your own or just absorb the atmosphere of this deeply spiritual place.

The tour starts from Barcelona, take a picturesque route along the Llobregat River to the foot of the spectacular Montserrat mountain. On the way, your guide will entertain you with tales, history and legends of the mountain, and the monastery and shrine you will see later.

Long before you reach Montserrat, you will see the jagged silhouette of the great mountain. This massive rock fortress is dotted with paths, stairs, caves, chapels and hermitages. You will drive through the Natural Park and up to the sanctuary 725m (2380 feet) above sea level.

When you arrive, you will enjoy a tour of Montserrat, during which your guide will point out the main places of interest. You will see the Benedictine monastery, nearly 1000 years old, perched half way up the mountain and sheltered by its peaks. You will also see the basilica with the Chapel of Our Lady of Montserrat. Known as La Moreneta, or the Black Virgin, she is the patron saint of Catalonia, and is a presence strongly felt and revered.

The basilica is full of the most beautiful paintings, gold lamps and decorated chapels. Enjoy exquisite drinks prepared in the monastery and watch an audio-visual presentation about life within the monastery walls.

After the guided tour, you will have time to dedicate to the aspects of this beautiful and spiritual place that interest you most.
