For your day-long Prague Sightseeing Tour from Vienna, you will meet your multi-lingual guide in front of the main entrance of the State Opera House.
The distance from Vienna to Prague is 406 km (252 miles). Settle back in your comfortable seat and enjoy the beauty of the Moravian countryside with its hills, woods, orchards and vineyards.
You will arrive in Prague around 12:15pm and your coach will take you to the huge hilltop castle complex (Hradschin) that includes the Royal Palace and the Cathedral. You then leave the coach and set off on a 2-hour walking tour of the city with your knowledgeable guide. You will view all the attractions from the outside only.
You will see the 600-year-old Charles Bridge linking the castle complex to the rest of the older part of town. This crucial river crossing, the only one on the Vltava (Moldau) River, made Prague a key point on the trade route between eastern and western Europe. The bridge is adorned with a continuous alley of 30 statues and statuaries. As one of Prague’s most famous landmarks, Charles Bridge is a lively place in the day time when it is full of craft stalls, street artists, buskers and pedestrians.
You also will see the National Theater, a building of great importance in the history and culture of the Czech Republic. It was built by public subscription between 1868 and 1881 because people wanted to put on plays and operas in their own Czech language instead of German – the language of the ruling Austrian Empire.
Your tour also takes in the elegant town houses on the banks of the river and the Jewish Cemetery. This is a deeply moving place where layer upon layer of graves are piled one on top of the other. It was in use from the early 15th century until 1787. Twelve thousand tombstones are currently visible and there may be as many as 100,000 burials in all.
The story goes that Hitler ordered that this cemetery should be left undamaged, because he was intending to build a Jewish museum in Prague after all the Jews in Europe had been exterminated.
Close to the Jewish Cemetery is the upscale shopping street popularly known as Paris Street, which is full of designer stores. Your tour also takes in Old Town Square, a lovely open space featuring a range of architectural styles. Here you will find the famous Astronomical Clock. You will also see Wenceslas Square, named after Saint Wenceslas, patron saint of Bohemia, the site of many historic events.
Your walking tour ends around 2:15pm. You will then have about 90 minutes free time to have a meal (payable direct), go shopping or explore the town.
At 3:55pm you should board your coach for the return journey. The coach will set off around 4:10pm and arrive in Vienna at about 9:30pm. At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel.
