Make your way to Fort, Tirumayam
Same as starting point
Explore the 40-acre wide fortress the Thirumayam Fort in the town of Thirumayam in Tamil Nadu. Since time immemorial it has been considered common practice to build forts to protect ones territories and subjects from invasions. One such magnificent fortified structure can be found in Thirumayam, situated along the Pudukkottai-Karaikudi highway. Pudukkottai is famous for its historical temples, Sittannavasal paintings and ancient monuments.
Constructed by the Raja of Ramnad in 1687, the fort was later handed over to his brother in law. At present the fort has been extensively renovated by Archaeological Survey of India. The majestic fort originally said to have been a 'ring fort' with seven concentric walls has only four surviving now.
The construction of the fort is of inferior quality as small blocks of stone were used along with bricks for the building of the fortification. As you walk around the premises, notice the rock cut Shiva temple and Vishnu temples with different statues, Darbar Hall, some inscriptions and pillared corridor situated at the foot of the hillock adjacent of the Fort.
