Look out for exotic birds, butterflies and plants on the way up, plus views of the trendy Ipanema and affluent Leblon neighborhoods of Rio.
At the top catch your breath as eye-popping panoramas of the city and coast unfold before you. You’ll see famous features such as Guanabara Bay, Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, Tijuca National Park, the Sugar Loaf, Copacabana beach and much more.
You will also get a close look at the incredible 30-meter high Christ Redeemer statue, Rio’s most famous landmark, which stands with arms outstretched as if to embrace the great city.
At the start of the Rio Sightseeing Tour – Corcovado with Christ Redeemer you will be picked up from your hotel in a coach at a time pre-arranged with the activity operator. An English-speaking guide will go with you on this excursion.
The tour passes the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas (the most famous lake in Rio) and continues on to the Cosme Velho Train Station at the bottom of Corcovado Mountain. At the station you catch a cog train to ascend the mountain.
If you have never come across a cog railway before, it consists of a toothed rail which meshes with one or more cog wheels on the train itself. This allows the train to ascend very steep gradients.
The train will take you up Corcovado through the dense Tijuca rain forest to the Christ Redeemer Statue. On the way up you will get a close look at the jungle vegetation and butterflies and see fine views of Ipanema and Leblon.
The top of Corcovado hill stands at 710 meters (2308 feet) above sea level. At the top you have between 40 to 60 minutes to enjoy the truly spectacular views of Rio and the surrounding countryside.
Your guide will point out Guanabara bay, Niteroi, Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, the botanical garden, the Jockey Club and the Tijuca National Park, Further north, you’ll see Copacabana, Botafogo, Flamengo and the famous Sugar Loaf.
Your guide will also tell you more about the iconic Christ Redeemer statue. Constructed between 1922 and 1931 in art deco style, it is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone. At nearly 40 meters (130 ft) in height (including pedestal), it is one of the tallest of its kind in the world.
You will ride the train back down to the bottom and board your coach for the return to your hotel, or the cruise port.
