Overview

Spend a fascinating morning exploring the beautiful historical fort of Vysehrad.

Classed by many as being the birthplace of the history of Prague, this ancient walled citadel dates back to the 10th century. Enjoy the picturesque views of the Vltava River before going off to explore the ramparts, bastions and gates of the fort. Discover the pretty Rotunda of St Martin, a curious circular structure which is famed for being the best preserved Romanesque monument of the area and also for being Prague’s oldest standing building.

Pass through the early baroque style Leopold’s Gate and continue on to the other monuments of the citadel. Immediately you notice the baroque feel of the area. Although being an ancient site most buildings were remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries following the Thirty Years War. Enter the cemetery, one of the main attractions for visitors, where the remains of the most distinguished figures in Czech art, science and culture are located. Admire the splendid sculpture commemorating the life of Dvorak and view the magnificent Slavin Monument a pantheon to important Czech personalities designed by the architect Antonin Wiehl.

Continue on to the Basilica of St Peter and Paul whose twin towers of 58m can be seen from miles around. Originally founded around 1070, the church now has a distinct neo gothic style. View the pretty carvings on the main portal before heading inside. The interior is richly decorated with baroque paintings, magnificent frescoes and beautiful wood carvings not to mention the wonderful vitrage windows.
