Overview

The imposing Karlstejn Castle is one of the Czech Republic’s finest monuments and is a must for any visitor to Prague. After being picked up at your hotel you will be driven through picturesque scenery and upon arrival at the destination will be expertly guided around this truly fantastic place.

Considered one of the most important medieval buildings in Europe, Karlstejn Castle offers the visitor a fairytale trip back in time. The setting itself is very dramatic with the castle imposing its presence over the pretty village of Karlstejn down below. Built in a gothic style, the castle was founded in 1348 by Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia and was a symbol of the greatness of the Kingdom of Bohemia. It withstood numerous attacks and sieges, most famously a seven month siege by the Hussites in the 15th century during which even dead bodies were catapulted over the walls. The tour will give you an idea of the impenetrable nature of this astounding fortress.

The importance of the castle becomes evident when you discover that this is where the crown jewels and other precious relics were housed and the tour will give you the opportunity to see some important works of ancient art dating from the 14th to the 19th centuries. The sumptuous interior of the castle is full of marvelous paintings, intricate wood engravings and frescos that will give you a real taste of the grandeur of the place and will leave you with a feeling of having glimpsed a very important part of Czech history.
