Montmartre was a hotbed for creatives and bohemians of the late 19th century; writers, students, painters and musicians all gathered here to find inspiration and like-minded company. The area, which is essentially a hill dominated by the porcelain-white Sacre Coeur, is where the art movement known as impressionism came to life. Painters such as Manet, Degas and Matisse found life in Montmartre invigorating; a liberal part of town where the lodgings were cheap and raucous cabarets kept the population entertained in the evenings. Talents such as Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec, famed for his portrayal of the dancing girls of Moulin Rouge, soon followed suite.
At the end of your walking tour, your guide hands you a special skip-the-line ticket to the Orsay museum that you are free to use any time, except on Mondays when the museum is closed. Situated on the left bank of the Seine and housed in a former rail station, the museum is an extraordinary place to visit not simply because of its vast collection of masterpieces but also for the unique architecture. The museum holds within the largest collection of impressionist art in the world, and the highlights of the compilation include works by Renoir, Pissarro, Whistler and Van Gogh.
Meet your guide at designated meeting point, they will be wearing a distinctive fuchsia pink vest. The tour group is kept small, so you will have the chance to interact with your guide and have all your questions answered.
Your English-speaking guide will lead you up through the hill known as Montmatre, the favourite haunt of artists and intellectuals to this day. Along the way you will see the Sacre Coeur, Moulin de la Galette, Moulin Rouge, house of van Gogh, Artists Square and Cabaret of the Assassins. Furthermore, you will visit the Clos Monmartre vineyards, tucked away between the busy streets of Montmartre.
The tour ends near metro Anvers. If you wish to visit the museum right after your tour, you must take the metro to Assemblée Nationale, from where there is short walk to the museum, or the RER C train and get off at Musée d’Orsay.
